Writing Guide: Required Article Formatting

The article that fits our needs revolves around one main question and strives to provide an in-depth answer and also anticipate and answer other questions the reader may have in relation to the main topic.

The more helpful, useful information provided, the better. Your focus should be on creating the most helpful, informative resource possible about the topic!

**If you reference a product from Amazon, please provide the ASIN # for the product. The ASIN can be easily found in the URL. Ex:

www.amazon.com/Omix-Ada-12020-03-Rear-View-Mirror/dp/B000FQ7IKE/ ← (ASIN in Red)

Formatting

  1. Write in a 1st person personal tone
  2. Keep sentences short and easy to read
  3. Avoid long paragraphs to optimize for mobile reading. No paragraph should be longer than 3 sentences; 1-2 is perfectly acceptable!
  4. Do not add photos

ARTICLE STRUCTURE (live example)

Introduction

For this portion, provide a few engaging sentences (1-3) that capture the reader’s attention and instill confidence that the information you have to share will be helpful and provide the answers they need. Show them that you’re knowledgeable about the subject.

Direct Answer (extremely important)

Provide the most direct answer as possible to the primary question being posed by the article title in 250-300 characters. This typically will be written in paragraph form, but a list is acceptable for How-To articles. Write this portion as if you were writing for an encyclopedia. This section is much easier to perfect after you’ve written the rest of the article.

Read On Section

This section is designed to encourage the reader to continue reading through the entire article. In a few (1-3) sentences, entice the reader with what is to come. Be creative in your approach, but be sure to let the reader know that you have more to share and they will benefit by reading to the end.

Like the direct answer section, it’s often easier to write this portion after the majority of the article is complete.

First Subheading (H2)

Here, provide a more in-depth answer to the main question or topic. Multiple paragraphs please. Use H3 and possibly H4 heading to break up and/or organize large blocks of text.

A conversational style is fine, but please focus on providing as much helpful, in-depth, information as possible for all aspects of the topic. This may include data, charts, quotes, reasoning, tables, nuances, and anecdotes.

Please glean your information from multiple sources and provide links at the end of the article. Also, please do not simply rephrase someone else’s work. This should be strictly original content that provides the best, most complete answer for the reader.

Additional Subheadings (H2)

Anticipate other questions the reader may have about the topic at hand and provide clear, informative answers for each one. Please be sure that each additional heading does not stray too far from the main topic of the article.

Here too, consider using tables, lists, quotes, etc. to keep things interesting. For each subheading, try to keep the text six paragraphs or less.

If your article includes this section based on the outline, you’ll be provided with commonly asked questions. There’s no need for any introduction here. Just write each question as its own (H3) and provide a Direct Answer (see above) for each.

Research Ideas

  1. Gather data from information found on forums.
  2. Make some phone calls to experts or professionals in the field.
  3. Poll users in an applicable Facebook group.
  4. Tweet or email an expert, author, etc.
  5. Reach out to a knowledgeable friend.
  6. Read through multiple articles on the subject – don’t base your work on only one source.

Thank you for your hard work!
