How to Turn Off Ring Notification Sound Fast

To turn off Ring notification sound, open the Ring app, tap the three dots on the device you want to quiet, tap Settings, and switch off Ring Alerts, Motion Alerts, or both.

Ring Alerts fire when someone presses the doorbell. Motion Alerts fire when the camera sees movement.

Turn off the one that is bothering you and leave the other alone. Most people only want the motion alerts gone.

Turn the alerts off completely

Ring rebuilt these menus, so old instructions that tell you to tap a house icon will send you nowhere.

  1. Open the Ring app on your phone.
  2. On the main dashboard, find the doorbell or camera you want to change.
  3. Tap the three dots next to it. Ring writes this as more, and it looks like •••.
  4. Tap Settings for that device.
  5. At the top of the screen you will see a set of switches.
  6. Switch off Ring Alerts to stop the doorbell press notification.
  7. Switch off Motion Alerts to stop the movement notification.

The switch turns gray when it is off. No sound, no banner, no buzz.

Turning off Motion Alerts does not stop your camera from recording, as long as you have a Ring subscription. It only stops the phone from announcing it.

Keep the alerts, change the sound instead

Sometimes the alert is fine and the noise is the problem. Ring lets you pick a different tone per device.

  1. Open the Ring app to the main dashboard.
  2. Tap the three dots (•••) on the camera or doorbell.
  3. Tap Alert Settings.
  4. Tap App Alert Tones.
  5. For a doorbell, tap Ring Alerts, then tap Sound and pick a quieter tone.
  6. Tap the back arrow in the top left corner.
  7. Tap Motion Alerts, then tap Sound and pick a tone for movement.

Giving the doorbell and the camera different tones is worth the two minutes. You learn to tell a visitor from a passing car without looking at your phone.

Silence everything for a few hours

Having people over? Snooze the alerts instead of turning them off and forgetting to turn them back on.

Snooze every camera at once

  1. Open the Ring app.
  2. Tap the crescent moon icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Choose a Snooze Duration.
  4. Tap Start Snooze.

Snooze one camera

  1. Tap the three dots (•••) on that camera.
  2. Tap the bell icon to turn Alerts Snooze on.

Ring is clear about one thing here: snoozing stops Motion Alerts, but doorbell rings and priority alerts still come through.

Silence the alerts on a schedule

If the same alert wakes you every night, set a Motion Schedule.

  1. Open the device page in the Ring app.
  2. Tap the Motion Settings tile.
  3. Find Motion Schedules.
  4. Add a schedule with the days and hours you do not want alerts.

Motion Zones are the other half of this. Draw a zone that skips the sidewalk and the street, and the alerts drop off on their own.

Quiet the Chime, not the phone

The chime box plugged into your hallway outlet is a separate device with separate settings.

  1. Tap the three dots (•••) on your doorbell.
  2. Tap Settings, then find Linked Chimes.
  3. Turn the chime off, or change its tone and volume.

If nothing worked

Check your phone, not the Ring app. Open your phone’s Settings, tap Notifications, find Ring, and confirm that Sounds is switched off there too.

A Focus mode or Do Not Disturb schedule on your phone can also override whatever the Ring app says.

Still hearing it? Sign out of the Ring app and sign back in. Settings sometimes fail to sync to a device that has been offline.

Frequently asked questions

Will turning off alerts stop my camera from recording?

No. Recording and alerting are separate. With a Ring subscription, your camera keeps recording motion events even while alerts are snoozed or switched off.

Can I turn off motion alerts but keep doorbell rings?

Yes, and this is what most people want. In the device Settings, switch off Motion Alerts and leave Ring Alerts on.

Is there a silent option for the alert tone?

Ring offers a list of tones rather than a true silent one. To get silence, switch the alert off in the Ring app, or turn off Sounds for Ring in your phone’s notification settings.

Why do I still get alerts during Do Not Disturb?

Priority Alerts are designed to break through Do Not Disturb. Open the device, tap Alert Settings, tap Priority Alerts, and switch off the ones you do not need.

Does the chime box have its own volume?

Yes. The Chime and Chime Pro have their own tone and volume settings, found under Linked Chimes in your doorbell’s settings.
