Why Is My Vizio TV Stuck on Downloading Updates?

Most of the time, a Vizio TV stuck on downloading updates is not broken. The download stalled, and a power cycle clears it.

Unplug the TV from the wall for 60 seconds, then plug it back in. It should boot right past the update screen.

If it lands on the same screen again, the cause is almost always your internet. A factory reset is the last resort, and only a few people need it.

Why your Vizio TV gets stuck on downloading updates

A Vizio TV pulls updates over your home internet. If the connection drops or slows during the download, the progress bar can freeze.

The other common cause is a slow download from Vizio’s servers. It looks frozen, but it is still working in the background.

Rarely, a half finished update leaves the software confused. That is the case a factory reset fixes.

Fix 1: Power cycle the TV

This clears a stalled update more often than anything else. Turning the TV off with the remote is not enough, so use the wall plug.

  1. Unplug the TV’s power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. While it is unplugged, press and hold the power button on the TV itself for a few seconds. Many owners do this to clear leftover charge.
  3. Wait a full 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the TV back in and turn it on.

The screen should now load the VIZIO OS Home screen instead of the update. If it does, you are done.

One caution: only pull the plug while the screen still says downloading. If it says installing or applying, let it finish, because cutting power then can corrupt the update.

Fix 2: Check your internet connection

The update needs a steady connection to finish. A weak WiFi signal is the usual reason it keeps stalling.

  1. Open a website or video on your phone to confirm the internet works.
  2. If it is slow, unplug your router for 30 seconds and let it restart.
  3. For the most reliable fix, plug an Ethernet cable into the LAN port on the back of the TV.

A wired connection does not drop the way WiFi can, so the download runs straight through. Some budget Vizio models are WiFi only and have no LAN port, so use the WiFi tips instead.

Fix 3: Give the update time

Sometimes the update really is downloading, just slowly. A large update on a slow connection can sit on the same percentage for a while.

Leave it alone for 20 to 30 minutes before you decide it is stuck. If the bar has not moved at all after that, move on to the next fix.

Fix 4: Check for updates by hand

After a power cycle, you can tell the TV to look for the update again. The menu name depends on your model.

  1. Press the Menu button on your Vizio remote.
  2. Select Help, then Check for Updates. On some models this lives under Admin & Privacy instead.
  3. Let the TV download and install. It may restart a few times.

To confirm it worked, go to Menu, then System, then System Information. Look at the line that says Version, not Cast Version.

Fix 5: Factory reset the Vizio TV

This is the last resort, because it erases your settings and signs you out of every app. Only do it if the update keeps failing.

  1. Press the Menu button on your Vizio remote.
  2. Select Admin & Privacy.
  3. Select Reset to Factory Settings, then Reset TV.

The TV turns off, resets, and reopens on the first time setup screen. You can also run this reset from the VIZIO Mobile app under the gear icon, then System, then Reset & Admin.

Fixes at a glance

Fix When to try it Time

Wait it out Bar moves slowly but moves 30 minutes
Check for updates TV boots but has no update 10 minutes
Factory reset Update keeps failing 15 minutes

If nothing worked

If the TV still hangs after a factory reset, the update file itself may be corrupted. That is beyond a home fix.

Contact Vizio support and ask for a manual firmware reinstall. If the TV is under warranty, mention that too.

While you wait, a cheap streaming stick plugged into an HDMI port lets you keep watching. Our fixes for YouTube not working on a smart TV and Prime Video not working on Roku can help there.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Vizio TV update take?

Most updates finish in a few minutes on a solid connection. A big update on slow WiFi can take 20 to 30 minutes, and the TV may restart more than once.

Will a factory reset delete my apps?

A reset signs you out of every app and wipes your settings. The built in apps come back, but you have to log in to each one again.

Can I stop a Vizio update once it starts?

You cannot cancel it from a menu mid download. The safe way to interrupt a truly frozen one is the power cycle in Fix 1, then let it try again.

Does a Vizio TV need Ethernet to update?

No, WiFi works fine when the signal is strong. Ethernet just gives you a steadier connection, which is why it is the best fix for repeated stalls.

Why does my Vizio TV keep asking to update?

If an update never finishes, the TV keeps trying. Fixing the connection or running the manual check usually ends the loop. If it does not, see our guide on an LG TV with no picture or sound for the deeper display checks that apply to any smart TV.

  1. A firmware update by Vizio disabled my television and turned it into a computer monitor. All smart TV functions were completely inoperative. This occurred about the time Walmart purchased Vizio. Tech support struck out trying to fix their screw up. Next firmwware update rolled around about 4 months later and the tv worked again. Vizio has lost my trust forever and when the current sets roll over and die about 2 to 4 years after purchase I would guess, I will move on to a brand that knows how to release firmware without breaking their TVs. Yes I only expect to get a few years of useful life out of a Vizio but you get what you pay for, cheap junk and careless employees that deploy defective “upgrades”.

  2. I can’t ignore it and none of these ideas worked. I can’t cancel it or get back to the menu or anything. I have turned it off and on and it just goes through again and gets stuck at the same spot. Ugh

  3. Problem with tv was after upgrades Vizio/Walmart tv seemed to favor using their net sites, got tired of the tv trying to lead me into their sites and control, did an uninstall of their Crap software and took it completely off internet attached a computer to hdmi and run all shows from there!
