JBL Headphones Not Charging? 7 Fixes That Work

JBL headphones not charging? The fix is usually a new cable, a stronger charger, or a quick port cleaning.

Start with a different USB cable and a wall charger rated at least 2 amps. Then leave them plugged in for 30 minutes before you judge anything.

Those three moves solve most dead JBL headphones. The rest of this guide walks through every fix in order, based on JBL’s own support steps as of July 2026.

One warning up front: never open your headphones to swap the battery. JBL states the batteries are not user serviceable, and opening the housing voids your warranty.

Why are your JBL headphones not charging?

Three causes explain nearly every case.

First, the cable or charger is bad. Charging cables fray inside long before they look damaged.

Second, the charging port is dirty or loose. Pocket lint packs into the port a little more every time you plug in.

Third, the battery drained to zero and needs time. A fully dead battery can sit silent for a while before it shows any sign of charging.

7 fixes to try, in order

1. Swap the charging cable

Try any other cable with the same connector. Newer JBL headphones use USB C, while many older models use the smaller micro USB plug.

Data only cables exist, so grab a cable that you know charges a phone.

2. Use a wall charger rated 2 amps or more

JBL recommends a USB charger with at least a 2 amp output. Check the tiny print on the brick for the letter A.

Skip the laptop USB port for now. Many put out too little power to wake a dead battery.

3. Try a different outlet

It sounds silly, but JBL lists this step for a reason. A dead outlet or a switched off power strip fools a lot of people.

4. Clean the charging port

Shine a light into the port. If you see lint, blow it out with short puffs of compressed air.

You can also loosen packed lint gently with a dry wooden toothpick. Never use anything metal, and never use liquid.

5. Charge for at least 30 minutes, then check

Plug in and walk away. On most JBL headphones an LED glows while charging, but a deeply drained battery may need time before the light comes on.

Still nothing after 30 minutes? JBL suggests leaving them on the charger overnight, at least 8 hours, before calling the battery dead.

6. Test the port for wiggle

With the cable plugged in, wiggle the connector gently. If it feels loose or charging flickers on and off, the port itself is damaged.

A loose port is a repair job, not a home fix. Skip to the warranty step below.

7. Reset the headphones

A frozen chip can stop the charging screen from ever updating. On JBL Tune series models, power the headphones on, then press and hold the volume up and volume down buttons together for more than 5 seconds.

The LED flickers when the reset takes. Other models use different button combos, so check JBL’s reset guide for yours.

What if the headphones charge but die fast?

That is a worn battery, not a charging problem. Batteries fade after a few years of full charge cycles.

Before giving up, make sure a low volume problem is not fooling you. A quiet pair feels dead even at full charge, and we cover that in our guide to JBL headphones that sound too quiet.

Random shutdowns mid song are a separate issue too. See our fix list for JBL headphones that keep turning off.

If nothing worked

Do not open the headphones. There are no user replaceable batteries inside, and opening the case voids the JBL warranty.

Instead, file a warranty claim. JBL headphones carry a 1 year warranty in the US.

You will need your serial number for the claim. Here is where to find the serial number on JBL headphones.

Out of warranty? Weigh the repair cost against a new pair.

Muffled sound plus a dying battery usually means the money is better spent on a replacement. Our guide to muffled JBL headphones helps you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my JBL headphones are charging?

On most models an LED glows steadily while charging and turns off when full. If the light never comes on after 30 minutes, work through the cable, charger, and port steps above.

How long do JBL headphones take to charge?

Around 2 hours from empty for many current models. Bigger over ear models can take a bit longer.

Can I replace the battery in JBL headphones myself?

No. JBL says the rechargeable batteries are not user serviceable, and opening the product voids the warranty. Use the warranty process instead.

Can I use my headphones while they charge?

Most wired capable JBL models work with the audio cable while charging. Bluetooth playback during charging varies by model, so check your manual.

  1. You need to sell replacement cases only. I have 4 buds now and 1 working case. After only a couple months. I stupidly bought another set. Extremely dissatisfied. I’ve told everyone to stay clear of jbl.
