Cox Internet Plans Sized by How Many Devices You Run
Cox internet plans come in four speeds, and Cox sizes them by how many devices are online at the same time: 300 Mbps for 1 to 3, 500 Mbps for 3 to 5, 1 Gig for 5 or more, and 2 Gig for dozens.
Count the screens in your house that run at once on a busy evening. That number picks your plan faster than any speed chart.
The four Cox internet plans and who each one fits
Cox states plainly that it has four base internet plans, topping out at 2 Gig. Here is how Cox describes the fit of each one.

Those device counts are Cox’s own numbers, taken from its internet plans page on August 24, 2026.
Upload speeds are a different story. Cox keeps them on its Speeds and Data Plans page rather than on the plans page, so read that one before you buy on upload speed alone.
Where the $30 headline actually comes from
The Cox internet page carries the line “starting at $30/mo for qualifying customers,” and its page title advertises speeds “from $30/mo.”
That $30 is ConnectAssist, and none of the four base plans is priced there.
Cox lists ConnectAssist under low cost internet plans, alongside Connect2Compete at $9.95 a month and StraightUp Internet at $50 a month prepaid.
To get ConnectAssist your household income has to sit under 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines, or you have to be enrolled in a program Cox names: SNAP, Head Start, WIC, certain public housing programs, Pell Grant, Veterans Pension, certain Tribal Programs, Supplemental Security Income, or certain state Medicaid programs.
You upload proof, and Cox rechecks your eligibility every year. All three low cost plans run up to 100 Mbps down and 5 Mbps up.
Connect2Compete is narrower still. It is for families with a student in kindergarten through 12th grade whose household is already in an eligible assistance program.
Cox publishes no price for the four main plans
Open the Cox internet plans page and the pricing cards are empty. Cox says the cards “are dynamically loaded based on your location” and asks you to sign in or enter your address.
So there is no national price to compare. Every Cox number you see quoted elsewhere came from somebody’s address, not from a published rate card.
Cox does spell out what happens after the promo, in its own fine print. Regular rates apply once the promotional period ends, and the current regular rates live at cox.com/pricing.
One line in that fine print is worth reading twice. The promotional period “runs from first installation of Internet service, even if you change speeds.”
Upgrading from 500 Mbps to 1 Gig partway through your promo does not restart the clock. Your promo still ends on the original schedule.
Every Cox base plan carries the same 1.25 TB data cap
This is the part that catches people who buy the fastest tier expecting the fewest limits.
Cox puts it in one sentence: all Cox internet plans include 1.25 TB, which is 1,280 GB, per month. That covers the 2 Gig tier exactly as it covers 300 Mbps.
Go over and the charge is $10 for each additional 50 GB block. Unused data does not roll over into next month.
There are two ways out. Buy an Additional Data Plan for a monthly charge, or add at least one unlimited Cox Mobile line and take 500 Mbps or faster, which Cox says makes your internet data unlimited.
The low cost tier is the exception in a good way. Cox’s affordable internet page lists unlimited data as a feature of those plans, though it puts StraightUp Internet back at 1.25 TB.
The price lock has three different lengths
Cox advertises a price lock, and the length depends on which page you are reading and what you buy.
- The internet plans page description promotes a 2 year price lock.
- 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps with at least one unlimited Cox Mobile line gets a 3 year lock.
- 2 Gbps with at least one unlimited Cox Mobile line gets a 5 year lock.
The mobile bundle also cuts $120 a year off the internet side. Cox notes that mobile speeds are reduced after 20 GB of usage per month, and that taxes and fees sit outside all of it.
Ask the agent which lock you are actually getting and get the length in writing, because a lock tied to a mobile line ends when the mobile line does.
What fiber powered means at your house
Cox markets its network as fiber powered, and it repeats the same sentence four separate times on its internet plans page.
“Cox Internet is powered by fiber and connected to the premises via coaxial cable.”
Fiber runs through the neighborhood and coax runs the last stretch into your home. That is a hybrid fiber coaxial network, and it is how most cable internet works.
True fiber to the home does exist on Cox in places. Cox says fiber “is available for certain households and areas” and that fiber service needs an ONT device and a compatible router, so ask specifically which one your address gets.
How to size a Cox internet plan without overbuying
Two things go wrong when people pick a tier, and they pull in opposite directions.
The first is buying too little, then blaming the router every time a video call stutters while somebody upstairs is gaming.
The second is paying for a gig you cannot use. If every device in the house is on WiFi and nothing is plugged in with an ethernet cable, the top tier rarely reaches a single screen at full speed.
I run 1 Gig on Brightspeed at our place, and I will say plainly that 500 or even 200 would have covered us. I took the headroom because the switch was already saving money against what Spectrum wanted.
Our house is a heavy one: two adults on work video calls all day, two teenagers who bring friends over, and every TV streaming.
Match that against Cox’s own device counts and 1 Gig is the honest answer for a household like that. A couple with a few devices should look hard at 300 or 500 before anything faster.

Cox also lets you change tiers later through your online account or by calling, so a wrong guess is not permanent.

If you can get more than one provider at your address, price all of them the same week and compare the regular rate rather than the promo rate.

How much does Cox internet cost per month?
Cox does not publish a price for its four base plans. The plans page loads pricing only after you enter a service address, and the $30 figure in its marketing is the ConnectAssist plan for households on government assistance.
Does Cox have a contract?
No annual contract, in Cox’s own definition, means no minimum term and no early termination fee. Service bills monthly until you cancel with 24 hours notice by chat, phone or retail store, and Cox may run a credit check or ask for a deposit.
Is the Cox modem free?
Cox says the Panoramic WiFi Gateway is included from day one with no cost equipment upgrades every three years. It is a modem and router in one that supports WiFi 6, and you can use your own router instead.
Which Cox plan do I need for working from home?
Cox puts remote work, video calls and 4K streaming on multiple TVs in the 500 Mbps tier, at 3 to 5 devices at once. Move up to 1 Gig when the count of screens running at the same time passes five.
