Why Can’t I Answer Calls on My Airpods Pro? (8 Troubleshooting Steps!)

With the current technological market, there are several alternatives to your sound output.

Apple’s Airpods, however, stand out from the rest.

This is because of their undeniable sound quality and compatibility.

To add to that, the Airpods also allow us to receive calls wirelessly.

At times you might encounter challenges when using your Airpods.

I did some research and found some of the reasons that might lead to this.

Without any further ado, let’s get into the article.

Why Can’t I Answer Calls on My Airpods Pro?

Make sure your Airpods are fully charged. You can also troubleshoot by trying to call a different person in your contact list. The situation might be on the person’s end too. Their microphone can be bad, making it hard for you to answer calls. Finally, there may be a network issue.

If your Airpods don’t work with phone calls but function smoothly with other apps, the problem becomes even more bizarre.

There are a few troubleshooting solutions that you can try in case you encounter such a problem.

How Do I Answer Calls With Airpods Pro?

Making a call on Airpods Pro has never been simpler.

You initiate the call by calling Siri, and this is by saying, “Hey Siri.” You then follow this up by mentioning the contact’s name.

This can be like “Call Jane mobile.” This method is, however, optional.

You can set your calls to be initiated by Siri or by using the force sensor.

To answer or end your call, you press the force sensor.

This can be on either of your Airpods.

If you opt for Siri, you can answer or decline your call using your voice.

This is, however, exclusive only for iOS 14.5 or later users.

At times, you might want to decline a call.

After this, you might want to send it to voicemail.

This is achieved with the Airpods Pro by double-pressing the force sensor.

To answer your second call, the first phone call must be on hold or end it.

By pressing the phone sensor, you can switch between the call on hold and the new call. You can also end the new call.

This will enable you to switch to the other one.

This is by double-pressing the force sensor.

How Do I Troubleshoot the Problems When Answering Calls?

Airpods use a combination of Bluetooth technology and hardware

There can be a very large number of scenarios why your Airpods could not answer calls.

There are a good number of effective solutions.

Below are some of the appropriate solutions that can work for you:

1. Changing the Call Audio Output

iPhones, just like any other technologies out there, are prone to errors.

At times your phone does not route your calls to the Airpods when you receive a call.

This is despite the Airpods being connected to your phone.

If this is the case, you should check if the Airpods are the selected audio output device.

If the Airpods are not in the list of your audio devices, then it is not connected to your phone.

When you long-press the Bluetooth icon in the icon center, you should be able to see whether your Airpods are connected or not.

You can alternatively go to the settings and check if the Airpods are connected.

2. Check the Volume of the Airpods

Sometimes, the volume of the AirPods might cause you to think that the device is not working. The volume of the Airpods can sometimes be low or muted.

This makes it impossible to hear the other recipient when in a phone call.

If the Airpods are your preferred audio device on the call screen, and you still can’t hear the other person, you should check the volume.

The AirPods volume has an indicator that pops up at the top left side of the screen.

You should tap the volume-up button on your screen to increase the volume. This should fix the problem with the phone calls.

3. Re-Enabling the Bluetooth on Your iPhone

Turning your Bluetooth on and off might at times help.

You should beforehand unplug the Airpods from your ears and put them back in their charging case.

You can then try answering a phone call and see if it will work.

4. Resetting Your Airpods

Resetting your Airpods is one of the most effective solutions.

You should unpair your Airpods from your connected devices.

You should then try reconnecting them from scratch.

To do this, you should open your Airpods Bluetooth settings on your iPhone and select forget this device.

To reconnect, you bring the Airpods close to your phone.

The Airpods should remain in their case.

You should open the case and put them in pairing mode.

5. Reset the Network Settings

Sometimes, you might struggle to answer a call on your Airpods due to some network difficulties.

For users who have experienced a similar problem, resetting your network settings might be the go-to solution.

It will wipe all the wireless network settings and eliminate any Bluetooth-related problems.

These are the same problems that might be causing the Airpods not to function effectively.

6. Cross-Check Your Bluetooth Access

Having different apps using your Bluetooth simultaneously might cause some problems.

There might be traffic and your Airpods might not function as intended.

There will be limited usage and you might not be able to answer calls from the Airpods.

Turning off Bluetooth access to other apps helps with such a problem.

If you want to check the apps using your phone’s Bluetooth, you should go to settings and toggle off the Bluetooth access for all the apps on the list.

7. Update Your Software Version

Running an outdated iOS version might cause some of the glitches with your Airpods.

This might be the cause of all the connectivity and usage glitches.

There might be some problems that have been patched in the newer versions that are not available to you.

If you encounter problems while interacting with the beta builds, you should back up your data and install a stable iOS build.

8. Check Airpods Technicalities on Other Apps

You might encounter problems with your Airpods not related to phone calls.

Some challenges might arise when using third-party applications.

This can be google-meet or skype on your phone.

You should always check that the Airpods are the selected output device on these apps.
