LG TV Screen Goes Black Randomly? 6 Fixes

When your LG TV screen goes black at random, the picture is usually fine and something is switching it off. Most of the time it is a power saving setting, a loose HDMI cable, or a software glitch.

Start with a power reset: unplug the TV, wait a minute, then hold the power button on the TV for 30 seconds while it is still unplugged. That one step clears most random black screens.

If the screen still goes black, work through the fixes below in order. The last one tells you how to spot a real hardware problem so you do not pay for the wrong repair.

Why does my LG TV screen go black randomly?

A few things cause this, and most are not a broken TV.

Energy saving mode dims or shuts the screen off when it thinks no one is watching.

A loose or failing HDMI cable drops the picture but keeps the sound.

A software bug freezes the display until you reset the TV.

A sleep timer or screen off setting turns the picture off on a schedule.

The backlight or the internal board is failing, which is the one real hardware cause.

Fix 1: Power reset the TV

This clears the memory and fixes most random black screens.

  1. Turn the TV off.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall.
  3. Wait about 60 seconds.
  4. While it is still unplugged, press and hold the power button on the TV itself for 30 seconds. This drains the leftover power.
  5. Plug it back in and turn it on.

Watch it for a while. If the screen stays on, the reset did the job.

Fix 2: Turn off Energy Saving mode

Energy saving is the most common reason an LG screen goes dark on its own.

  1. Press the Settings button on your remote (the gear icon).
  2. Open All Settings.
  3. Go to General. On newer LG TVs, open Energy Saving or Eco mode inside Device Self Care or OLED Care. On older sets, you will find Energy Saving under Picture instead.
  4. Set Energy Saving Steps to Off.
  5. Look for Auto Power Off or Sleep after no signal, and turn that off too.

Your screen should stop dimming and shutting down.

Fix 3: Reseat the HDMI cable and check the input

A loose cable makes the picture cut out while the sound keeps playing.

  1. Unplug the HDMI cable from the TV for 3 seconds, then push it back in firmly.
  2. Try a different HDMI port on the TV.
  3. If you have a spare HDMI cable, swap it in, since cables do go bad.
  4. Press the Input button on your remote and make sure the right source is selected.

If a different port or cable fixes it, the old one was the problem. Our guide on an LG TV that turns on but shows no picture or sound covers cable and input issues in more depth.

Fix 4: Turn off the sleep timer and screen off setting

LG TVs have timers that shut the picture off on a schedule.

  1. Press Settings, then open All Settings.
  2. Go to General, then System, then Time and Timer, then Timers. On older LG TVs this is just General, then Timers.
  3. Set Sleep Timer to Off.
  4. Turn off Power Off Timer if it is set.

Also make sure you did not turn on the audio only Screen Off mode by accident, since that plays sound with the picture dark. If you did, press any button on the remote to bring the picture back.

With the timers off, the screen will stay on until you turn it off.

Fix 5: Update the TV software

An old software version can cause the screen to blank out.

  1. Press Settings, then All Settings.
  2. Go to Support, then Software Update.
  3. Turn on Allow Automatic Updates.
  4. Tap Check for Updates and install any it finds.

Let the TV finish and restart on its own.

Fix 6: Test for a backlight or board failure

If none of that worked, check whether the panel itself is failing.

  1. Turn the TV on and play something with sound.
  2. In a dark room, shine a phone flashlight at the screen from the side, close to the glass.
  3. Look for a very faint picture under the light.

If you can see a faint image, the screen works but the backlight is dying. If you smell burning or hear a faint click right before it goes black, the internal board is failing.

Both are hardware repairs. Contact LG or an authorized technician rather than buying parts blindly. If your TV keeps going black within minutes of every reset, that also points to hardware.

What if my LG TV keeps going black even after a reset?

If the black screen returns within a few minutes every time, and the flashlight test shows no faint picture, the backlight or a board has likely failed.

At that point, get a repair quote from LG. On older or budget sets, the repair can cost close to a new TV, so compare before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my LG TV go black but the sound still plays?

The picture is dropping while the audio keeps going. That points to a power saving setting, a loose HDMI cable, or a failing backlight, not a dead TV.

Does energy saving mode turn my LG TV screen off?

Yes. Energy saving and auto power off can dim or shut the screen when the TV senses no input. Turning both off stops it.

How do I know if my LG TV backlight is bad?

Shine a flashlight at the dark screen in a dark room. A faint image under the light means the backlight is failing while the rest of the TV still works.

Can a software update fix a random black screen?

Sometimes. If the cause is a software bug, updating clears it. If the screen goes black again right after, the problem is more likely hardware. If your remote is also acting up, see our guide on controlling an LG TV without the remote.
