Are AirPods Pro Cases Interchangeable? Not Always
Are AirPods Pro cases interchangeable? Only within the same exact model. Two cases made for AirPods Pro 2 with USB C swap freely, but a Pro 1 case will not run your Pro 2 or Pro 3 buds.
The cases look nearly identical from across the room. Inside, the antennas, firmware, and charging contacts are different.

Which AirPods Pro case works with which buds
Apple has shipped four AirPods Pro cases. Each one pairs with the buds it shipped alongside.

Note the two different Pro 2 cases. Apple sold AirPods Pro 2 with a Lightning case in 2022 and again with a USB C case in 2023, and the buds carry different model numbers.
Match the case to your buds, not to the words “AirPods Pro 2” on a listing.
How to find your model number
Do this before you spend a cent.
- Put your AirPods in their case and open the lid next to your iPhone.
- Open the Settings app (the gray gear icon).
- Tap Bluetooth near the top.
- Find your AirPods in the list.
- Tap the small blue circle with the letter i next to them.
- Scroll down to Model Number. It starts with the letter A.
No iPhone handy? The model number is printed on the underside of each earbud, in text small enough to need good light.
What the numbers mean
- A2083 or A2084: AirPods Pro 1, introduced 2019
- A2698, A2699, or A2931: AirPods Pro 2 with the Lightning case, introduced 2022
- A3047, A3048, or A3049: AirPods Pro 2 with the USB C case, introduced 2023
- A3063, A3064, or A3065: AirPods Pro 3, introduced 2025
What happens if you use the wrong case
Nothing catches fire. The buds simply refuse to work with it.
Apple states that each case works only with the earbuds it was made for, so mismatched buds will not pair or charge properly.
The lid may close and the magnets may hold. That does not mean the pair is charging or connected.
How to tell the cases apart by eye
If the model number sticker is worn off, look at the bottom of the case.
- Two small holes flanking the port: that is a speaker, so the case is a Pro 2 or a Pro 3.
- No speaker holes and a Lightning port: AirPods Pro 1.
- A loop for a lanyard on the side: Pro 2 or Pro 3.
- A USB C port, oval shaped: Pro 2 USB C version, or Pro 3.
The Pro 3 case has a shallow indentation on the front, because you set it up by tapping the front rather than by pressing a button on the back.
How to set up a replacement case
Apple splits these instructions in two, and the split matters.
For AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2
- Put both earbuds in the new case.
- Connect the case to power, close the lid, and wait 20 minutes.
- Open the lid. If the status light already flashes white, skip to step 5.
- With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber and then white.
- With the light flashing white, close the lid.
- Open Settings, tap Bluetooth, tap the blue circle with the i next to your AirPods, and tap Forget This Device.
- Open the lid and hold the case near your iPhone. Tap Connect on the animation, then tap Done.
For AirPods Pro 3
There is no button on the back of the Pro 3 case. You tap the front instead.
- Put both earbuds in the new case.
- Connect the case to power, close the lid, and wait 20 minutes.
- Open the lid. If the light already flashes white, skip ahead.
- Double tap the front of the case while the light is on.
- Double tap again once the light flashes white.
- Double tap a third time when the light flashes faster.
- Wait for the light to flash amber and then white, then close the lid.
- Forget the AirPods in Bluetooth settings, open the lid near your iPhone, and tap Connect.
If nothing worked
A case that never flashes white is either dead or not made for your buds. Charge it for a full hour before you decide.
Apple sells replacement cases on their own. Take your model number to an Apple Store or order through Apple Support, and you will get the right one.
Skip the cheap replacement cases sold under vague listings. They often ship the wrong generation, and the pairing failure looks identical to a broken case.

Can I use a friend’s AirPods Pro case with my AirPods Pro?

Apple lists them as separate products with separate model numbers, so treat them as different. Check the number on your buds and buy the matching case.
