Doss Bluetooth Speaker Review
Doss is a well-liked speaker company known for producing high-quality sound devices. They started in 1999 and have only grown since. My favorite aspect of Doss, other than their commitment to improving speaker technologies, is that all their products are very affordable.
They believe everyone should have access to proper sound systems and have stood by that mentality. Most of their products are around the $30 range.
But are they everything they’re cracked up to be? Let’s take a look in this Doss Bluetooth speaker review.
Doss Speakers
Doss has many different product lines and is always creating new, innovative speakers. At the time of this review, Doss has four Bluetooth speaker lines and one Bluetooth ear-bud line. Let’s check them out.
SoundBox
The SoundBox is Doss’ most well-known and developed Bluetooth speaker, with five generations, including SoundBox Plus, Pro, Pro+, and XL. The SoundBox is a sleek and affordable speaker capable of playing for 12 hours straight. It is equipped with touch controls, Bluetooth hook-up, and premium sound quality.
Measuring just 6.6” x 2.9” x 2.7”, the SoundBox is easy to take anywhere with you. It is durable and waterproof to IPX4. This 12-watt speaker boasts a deeper sound and fuller base than most other portable speakers can deliver.
With this surprisingly cheap speaker, you get a user manual, USB charging cable, and auxiliary cable in addition to the speaker.
Pros:
- Lightweight
- Portable
- Inexpensive
- Durable
- Produces high-quality sound
- Works indoors and outdoors
- 12-hour battery life
Cons:
- It is not fully waterproof
E-GO
If you are looking for a waterproof design, the Doss E-GO Bluetooth speaker has you covered. This speaker is waterproof to IPX6. It is smaller than the SoundBox, measuring only 4.3” x 2.1” x 2.9”, and weighs less than one pound.
The E-GO has special Alexa-compatible technology that lets you control it using voice commands, making it the perfect speaker to keep at a poolside or beach. This speaker is extremely durable and portable but still produces high-quality sounds with a full range.
Due to its smaller size, the E-GO only has an eight-hour battery life, but it does also come with its own USB charging cable, auxiliary cable, and user manual. There are two generations of E-GO: The E-GO and the E-GO II.
Pros:
- Portable
- Water-resistant
- Produces high-quality sounds
- Alexa and voice command-compatible
- Lightweight
Cons:
- Not fully waterproof
- Shorter battery life
Traveler
The Traveler is the perfect companion speaker for all outdoor activities. Measuring 6.5” x 2.4” x 4.4”, it is a little on the larger side, but it is still very easily portable and lightweight. Additionally, it has a handle and strap to make travel even safer.
The traveler is waterproof to IPX6 and very durable. It has a battery life of 12 hours and comes with dual subwoofers for a full and bassy sound.
The Traveler comes with the usual USB charging cable, auxiliary cable, and user manual, but it also comes with a handle and long carrying strap.
Pros:
- Premium sound quality
- 12-hour battery life
- Durable
- Portable
- Lightweight
- Water-resistant
Cons:
- Not fully waterproof
GENIE
The GENIE is the smallest Doss Bluetooth speaker, measuring just 2.95” x 1.27 x 2.0”. It is extremely lightweight at less than half a pound and just as durable as the other speakers with a water-resistance of IPX4. It also has an eight-hour battery life and comes with a lanyard attachment for easy portability.
This palm-sized speaker is ideal for any situation as it is very easy to travel with, has a long battery life, and still delivers powerful, high-quality sound. It comes with a user manual, USB charging cable, auxiliary cable, and a lanyard.
Pros:
- Water-resistant
- Very durable
- Extremely small and portable
- Very lightweight
- Long battery life
Cons:
- Easy to lose
ICON
Though they are earbuds and not speakers, I thought I would include the Doss ICON Bluetooth earbuds on this list because they are pretty neat. The ICONs have a battery life of up to 30 hours, that’s 120 hours of standby or six hours of play at full volume.
They are water-resistant up to IPX5 and have touch controls. They have a wireless range of over 30 feet and take less than two hours to fully charge. While they are not technically speakers, what are earbuds if not tiny speakers?
The ICONs come with their own charging case, a USB connector, three sizes of bud tips, a user manual, a brochure, and a social media card.
Pros:
- Secure fit
- Different sizes
- Wildly long battery life
- Individual charging case
- Water-resistant
Cons:
- Not technically a speaker
Design
Though the designs do vary between speakers, most Bluetooth Doss speakers seem to aim for a boxy yet sleek look. They all tend to be softened rectangles, except for the Traveler.
The Traveler is unique and, in a manner of speaking, cute. It still looks like a box, but it has cut-off corners that give the appearance of an octagon rather than a square. It is also the only speaker to feature a graphic design. On the front of the Traveler speaker, there is an image of a fox that uses two lights for the eyes.
Overall, it is still minimalist, but the picture and lights definitely add some flare. If you are shopping for speakers purely based on aesthetic design, I would definitely recommend the Soundbox as it is the least conspicuous and would look best if you are planning to keep it displayed in your home.
Features
Unlike most other portable speakers, most Doss speakers are, at least to some degree, water-resistant. Unfortunately, even the E-GO, which is touted as waterproof, is not fully waterproof.
However, other speakers like the Traveler, which is not marketed as even water-resistant, are actually reasonably water-resistant. I like this feature a lot as it means the speaker won’t instantly get wrecked if you forget it in the rain for a short while.
While some of Doss’ Bluetooth speakers have more capabilities than others – like the E-GO’s Alexa compatibility – all the speakers are designed to be easy to use and very accessible. They all come with an auxiliary cable, giving you the option to use them wired.
They also have simple controls that are straightforward and simplistic. I like the overall user-friendliness of Doss speakers because you don’t need to be tech-savvy to enjoy them.
Finally, of all the features of Doss’ speakers, the best is, of course, their Bluetooth capabilities. The Bluetooth connection is easy to set up; all it takes is one button press to pair items, and then you can fully enjoy the proper sound.
Using Bluetooth for speakers is incredibly freeing as it allows you to install quality sound with any device. You can connect it to your phone for the perfect beach party, hook it up to your laptop for the complete 3D cinema experience, or even connect it to your TV so you can listen to your favorite show while you bake.
Quality
Taking into account that Doss speakers are made to be portable and affordable, one would expect the sound quality to be mediocre at best. This is not the case, however. I was genuinely surprised the first time I heard a Doss speaker. It’s not studio or cinema-quality, of course; no portable speaker ever will be. But the overall tonal quality of Doss speakers is impressive, to say the least.
Doss puts a heavy emphasis on ensuring that their speakers boast a full range of sounds from decent high-end to fully rounded base. Because of the limited real estate portable speakers have to work with, they will never be able to have as wide a sound range as huge ceiling-inset speakers, but Doss speakers do include subwoofers.
The subwoofers allow for multiple tonal levels to be played. This means you can hear the full range of sound of a song or movie without compressing the audio into solely mid-range levels.
Generally, bigger speakers like the SoundBox have superior sound over small ones like the GENIE, but you won’t be losing much quality between the products, so don’t feel that you need to buy the biggest one.
Final Thoughts
Doss portable Bluetooth speakers are a superb way to bring quality sound with you anywhere. They are durable, lightweight, and easy to use. Doss is making a huge effort to bring quality sound devices to the public at affordable prices, and I think they have done a great job.
If you are looking for a Bluetooth speaker, Doss is an excellent choice. My personal favorite is the Soundbox because it looks and sounds good and has a long battery life, but if I were to take a speaker with me on a group camping trip, I’d choose the Traveler. The fox design is incredibly cute, and it is the easiest speaker to travel with. You can even take it on a hike.
In review, Doss speakers are an excellent, affordable choice for anyone looking for a Bluetooth speaker with quality sound.
