With a little extra guidance on navigating the Epic Games launcher with Mac, you can elevate your gaming experience in no time. Here are some tips, tricks, and troubleshooting guidance:
Installing or Reinstalling the Launcher
To download Epic Games, you need to go to their website and then click on the blue “Download” button in the top right-hand corner of the screen. The Epic Games website will automatically install the correct form of the application for Mac versus Windows.
After the download is complete, you will need to double-click on the Epic Installer disk image from your downloads folder. This will bring up a window titled “Epic Games Launcher” that will prompt you to move the launcher icon into your applications folder. You just need to click on the icon and drag it over the applications folder, all within the “Epic Games Launcher” window.
After the progress bar for copying over the launcher to applications is complete, you can close down all the windows you had open.
On your home screen, you should see a new icon with an image of a white box titled “Epic Games Launcher”. Right-click on this icon and select eject from the list of options. This will get rid of the disk image file.
The concise video below will help you see how the process works in real-time. It is a simple download, and you shouldn’t have any issues.
If you are wanting to reinstall the application to troubleshoot issues, you will need to completely delete Epic Games first. The deletion process will permanently delete any of your installed games as well. After everything is deleted, follow the same installation steps to reinstall.
You can then log back into your Epic Games account and reinstall any of the games you want to play.
Starting and Quitting the Launcher
To open and start the launcher, use the launch pad (the icon that looks like a rocket) to open up your applications. Click on the black and white Epic Games Launcher icon to open up the app.
If this is the first time you are opening it, you may need to confirm the opening in a smaller window that pops up to warn you that the app is from the internet. After confirming the open, updates may automatically download, then the launcher will open and be ready to use on your Mac.
Closing out of the launcher is the same process as any other window or application. You will see the three familiar red, yellow, and green dots in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. You just need to click on the red “x” circle and it will quit the launcher. If you cannot see the “x” button, try pressing the escape button on your keyboard.
If you are trying to quit the download of the launcher, there are a few different points during the download where you can cancel. When you first click the blue “download” button on the Epic Games website, you should see a progress bar pop up during the download.
There is an “x” icon on the right side of the progress bar. If you click the x before the download is complete, it will cancel the downloading process.
If you’re at the point of copying over the launcher into your applications folder, you will see a similar progress bar, and you have the same opportunity to cancel the copying process. If you decide you do not want Epic Games on your Mac, you will want to go back through your downloads and folders to make sure you clear out anything that started to install.
Your Mac will process the download fairly quickly, so if you are not able to cancel the download before the progress bar finishes, just delete the application after the download is complete.
Deleting Epic Games
If you want to completely remove Epic Games from your Mac, there are a few steps to follow to make sure everything is gone. Of course, you will want to start by closing out of the launcher (if it is open).
Check your activity monitor to see if Epic Games is currently running any processes, downloads, or updates. If there is any activity in progress, you can just wait for it to finish, and it will be deleted along with the rest of the application.
Find Epic Games Launcher in your applications folder. You can simply click and drag the icon into the trash icon. Confirm the deletion if necessary. Besides the actual application, Epic Games may have files stored in other places on your Mac.
Go into your folder library and check Application Support, Caches, Preferences, Logs, and Cookies for anything from Epic Games. You should delete any files you find as well. If you do not plan to reinstall, deleting everything opens up more space on your Mac, and if you do want to reinstall, you will want to delete everything to reduce clutter and confusion. (Source)
Mac and Epic Games Compatibility
As you probably know, The Epic Games launcher is compatible with Macs. However, not all games can be played on the Mac platform. You will need to check individual games to make sure that they work with Apple devices. You should be able to find compatibility information in the “About Game” section for any title you are interested in.
It is important to remember that starting with the 10.19.19 version of the launcher, Epic Games does not support macOS 10.9.
This shouldn’t be an issue for most Mac users since it is an older version, but make sure you are updating your Mac. If your Mac is not able to update to 10.10, you will not receive any Epic Games launcher updates. (Source)
