Fix an iPhone Screen Moving by Itself in Apple’s Four Steps
An iPhone screen moving by itself, tapping and scrolling with no finger on it, gets four steps from Apple in a set order: restart the phone, clean and dry the screen, unplug the charger and any accessory, then take off the case and screen protector. If the screen still acts up after all four, Apple’s page says “you might need to set up service for your device.”
Apple’s screen page prints none of the words ghost touch, moving by itself or phantom touch. Its one symptom heading reads “If your screen is too sensitive or responds intermittently to touch”, and reading a self tapping screen as that symptom is this article’s call.
The four steps below are the four Apple lists under that heading, in Apple’s order, with the restart buttons for each iPhone model group filled in from Apple’s restart page.
Step 1: restart the iPhone
Turn the phone fully off, wait, and turn it back on before you try anything else. Apple’s first step reads “Restart your iPhone or iPad”, and the word iPhone in it links to Apple’s restart page, which gives the button presses by model group.
- iPhone X, 11, 12, 13 or later: “Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.”
- iPhone 6, 7, 8 or SE (2nd or 3rd generation): “Press and hold the side button until the power-off slider appears.”
- iPhone SE (1st generation), 5 or earlier: “Press and hold the top button until the power-off slider appears.”
From there every model does the same thing: “Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off.” To turn it back on, hold the side button until the Apple logo shows, or the top button on an SE (1st generation), 5 or earlier.
Apple’s restart page keeps a force restart for one case only, in its words: “If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device”. A screen that taps on its own but still responds gets the normal restart above.
Step 2: clean the screen and dry it
Get the glass clean and make sure it is dry before the next step. Apple’s second step: “Make sure that your screen is clean and free of any debris or water.”

Step 3: unplug the charger and any accessory
Pull the cable out of the port and disconnect any other Lightning or USB C accessory. Apple’s third step: “Disconnect any Lightning or USB-C accessories.”
This step is also the test. If the screen behaves once the accessory is unplugged, Apple’s next instruction is: “try using a different outlet, cable, or charger.”
Apple’s page names no brand, price or certification for the replacement cable or charger. A different one is the whole instruction.

Step 4: take off the case and the screen protector
Remove both and use the screen bare. Apple’s fourth step: “Remove any cases or screen protectors.”
Apple’s page does not say which protectors or cases cause the problem, and it does not say to buy a different kind.
If the screen still moves by itself: Apple says get service
After the four steps, Apple’s page has one heading left, “Get support”, and one line under it: “If your screen still isn’t working, you might need to set up service for your device.” The link under that line reads “Get service”.
The page prints no repair price, no Apple Store advice and no third party repair advice, so none appears here. The word might is Apple’s, so service is the next step Apple names while the outcome stays open.
What Apple’s two pages do not say
An earlier version of this article listed seven fixes, among them updating iOS and a factory reset, and blamed cheap chargers and a minor glitch. Apple’s screen page lists four steps and then service, and this article follows that list.
The strings update, Software Update, reset, erase, firmware, glitch and common print on neither Apple page cited below. Whether an iOS update helps a moving screen is a question those two pages do not answer, so this article does not answer it either.
