Is the iPad Pro Screen Scratch-Resistant?

People use iPad Pros to watch movies, read books, listen to music, create digital art, check their email, and surf the web.

Its large screen tends to be a selling point, but how scratch-resistant is that screen?

Is the iPad Pro Screen Scratch-Resistant?

Apple does not explicitly state whether or not the iPad Pro screen is scratch-resistant and many iPad Pro users have reported scratches, so your iPad Pro screen definitely can scratch. However, by adding a tempered glass screen protector, you can help your screen remain scratch-free.

iPad Pros cost a lot of money. By researching their pros and cons, you can save yourself time, money, and frustration.

Read on to learn more about the advantages and disadvantages of the iPad Pro to see if it’s right for you.

Is the iPad Pro Durable?

Durable objects can withstand wear, pressure, and damage.

If you’re prone to dropping things, then the iPad Pro’s durability is something you should consider.

The iPad Pro’s glass screen makes it relatively fragile.

A scratched or cracked screen can cause a host of problems.

For instance, a scratched or cracked screen can make pictures harder to see and text harder to read.

It can also cause discoloration and unsightly dark spots.

Fragments of the glass could puncture the screen and cause the device to stop working altogether! That’s why it’s important to maintain the integrity of the screen before it’s compromised by any cracks or scratches.

According to one durability test, the iPad Pro screen remained scratch-free until it experienced six pounds of pressure.

At levels higher than that, the screen smashed, and the device broke.

That said, the screen tends to break, scratch, and crack only when the device has been dropped from heights of more than a foot onto hard surfaces.

In other words, if you can avoid dropping your device, then your screen should be fine.

How Can You Increase the iPad Pro’s Durability?

Place a tempered glass screen protector on top of the iPad Pro’s screen to help it remain scratch- and crack-free.

I recommend tempered glass screen protectors because they are sturdier than plastic screen protectors and allow fingers and writing utensils to glide more easily over the surface.

Plastic screen protectors also tended to make my device look duller, so even though they’re generally cheaper, I didn’t find them as effective.

Tempered glass screen protectors, on the other hand, are inexpensive, easy to replace, and easy to clean.

That said, even with a screen protector, the iPad Pro is not waterproof.

How does the iPad Pro Differ from the iPad?

Unlike the basic iPad, the iPad Pro has an M1 chip as well as a Thunderbolt port.

The M1 chip is a game-changer because it makes the latest iPad Pro even faster and more efficient than its predecessors.

On top of that, the Thunderbolt port allows for faster charging and data transfer speeds.

The iPad Pro also has an enhanced front-facing camera, which allows for more flattering selfies and better video calls.

The iPad Pro also offers 16GB of RAM and 2 TB of storage.

To put that into perspective, the latest iPad offers 256 GB of storage.

Since there are 1000 GB in a TB, that means that the latest iPad has about a tenth of the storage of the iPad Pro.

With that extra storage, you could download hundreds of songs or dozens of movies.

Additionally, the 12.9-inch model comes with a Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED display.

If crisp, bright, true-to-life picture quality matters to you, then this is an exciting new feature!

The 11-inch iPad Pro vs the 12.9-inch iPad Pro

The 11-inch iPad Pro and the 12.9-inch iPad Pro share many of the same features:

  • ProMotion technology and True Tone
  • M1 chip
  • Ultra-Wide cameras
  • Up to 2 TB of storage
  • USB‑C connector with support for Thunderbolt / USB 4
  • 5G capability

Therefore, the major differences between the two models are cost and display technology.

The 11-inch model starts at $799 and has an LED Liquid Retina display, whereas the 12.9-inch model starts at $1,099 and has a Liquid Retina XDR display.

Both models support features like 120Hz ProMotion, P3 wide color, and True Tone, but the 12.9-inch model offers improved brightness and reduced blooming for better picture quality.

Four Factors to Consider Before Buying an iPad Pro

First, the iPad Pro is expensive, so cost might be the most important factor you consider.

Second, Apple’s iOS is a closed system. This means it comes with many limitations that may restrict the user’s experience.

For instance, the file system is not easy to access, and data transfers can be difficult without iTunes or AirDrop.

Third, the iPad Pro limits the kind of files you can view as well as the apps you can use.

If you plan to use it as a computer, then the Microsoft Surface Pro might be a better fit.

Fourth, the iPad Pro does not give users the option to expand the storage, so the built-in storage is what you’re limited to.

That said, 2 TB of storage will be more than enough for most people.

Is the iPad Pro Worth Buying?

Despite some limitations, the iPad Pro is still worth buying.

This is particularly true if you want a larger screen that uses more advanced display technology, faster processing, greater storage, and more cameras.

That said, if you already own an iPad or an older iPad Pro–and it still works–then the latest iPad Pro may not be worth the price.

Either way, just remember to buy a screen protector to help your screen stay scratch- and crack-free!
