Check the Light When Xfinity Remote Won’t Change Channels
When your Xfinity remote won’t change channels, press the Xfinity button and watch the small status light at the top of the remote. No light at all means the batteries are dead, and two fresh AA cells fix it in under a minute.
A light that blinks while the screen sits still means the remote lost its pairing with the TV Box. Pairing it again takes about two minutes.
Every button sequence and menu path below was checked against Xfinity’s support pages and its printed remote guides in July 2026.

Why your Xfinity remote won’t change channels
Your remote sends two different kinds of signals.
Power and volume go straight to your TV over infrared. Channel commands go to the Xfinity TV Box, which is a separate device with its own link to the remote.
That split is why the volume can still work while the channels do nothing.
Xfinity calls the paired link Aim Anywhere. Channel commands travel by radio once the remote is paired, so the box can sit behind a closed cabinet door and still respond.
The status light at the top of the remote tells you which side broke.
| What you see | What it means | Where to go |
|---|---|---|
| No light on any button press | Batteries are dead or seated wrong | Fix 1 |
| Light blinks, screen does nothing | The remote lost its pairing | Fix 2 |
| Volume works, channels do not | Only the TV is hearing the remote | Fix 2 |
| Menu opens, channels stay stuck | The TV Box is frozen | Fix 3 |
Fix 1. Put in fresh AA batteries

Xfinity keeps a battery change on its own remote checklist, and a partly working remote is the exact symptom that sends people looking in the wrong place.
Start here even when a few buttons still respond.
- Slide the battery cover off the back of the remote. X1 voice remotes take two AA cells, so check the compartment before you buy a pack.
- Pull both old batteries out. Drop two new AA cells in, lining up the plus and minus marks stamped inside the case.
- Snap the cover back on. Press any button and look at the top of the remote. The status light should flash.
- Press channel up. The channel should move within a second.

Fix 2. Pair the remote to your TV Box again

Pairing ties the remote to one specific TV Box. It drops after a power outage, an equipment swap, or a reset.
An on screen message about the remote is the box telling you the pair went away.
Our full walkthrough on how to pair an Xfinity remote to your TV covers the TV power and volume side once the box side is working.
These steps cover X1 TV Boxes. On a Flex or Xumo box, press the microphone button and follow the pairing steps that appear on the TV.
- Turn on the TV and the Xfinity TV Box. Switch the TV to the input that shows the Xfinity guide.
- Point the remote at the TV Box.
- On an XR15, press and hold the Xfinity button and the Info button together for five seconds. On an XR11, hold Setup instead. The status light turns from red to green.
- Type the three digit code shown on your TV. The screen confirms the pair, and channel up should work right away.
Xfinity accepts a spoken shortcut once the remote already answers the box. Hold the microphone button, say Program remote, and follow the same on screen steps.
Reset the remote when pairing fails twice
A factory reset wipes the pairing and starts clean. Run it only when you are ready to pair again, because the remote controls nothing until you do.
Find the model on the back of the remote or inside the battery compartment, then use the matching sequence. Our guide to how to reset an Xfinity remote goes deeper on each model.
| Remote model | Box it belongs to | Factory reset sequence |
|---|---|---|
| XR11 | X1 TV Box | Hold Setup until the light turns green, then press 981 |
| XR15 | X1 TV Box | Hold A and D until the light turns green, then press 981 |
| XR16 | Xfinity Flex | Hold Info and Home until the light blinks, then press Power, Last, volume down |
| XR100 | Xumo Stream Box | Hold Back and the plus button until it beeps, then press 981 |
The XR15 carries no Setup button at all. Xfinity’s printed setup card for that remote tells you to hold the A and D buttons in its place, and Xfinity’s support page identifies A as the triangle and D as the diamond.
The older XR2 and XR5 remotes use their Setup button as well. Xfinity’s remote page carries the exact code for those two, and it sits in the sources at the bottom.
After the reset, repeat the pairing steps above.
Fix 3. Restart the Xfinity TV Box
A frozen box ignores channel commands while the on screen menu still looks normal.
- Press the Xfinity button. The main menu opens across the screen.
- Move to the gear icon for Settings and press OK.
- Choose Device Settings, then Power Preferences, then Restart.
- Wait for the box to reboot. The guide reloads on its own in a few minutes.
- If the menu refuses to open, pull the power cord from the back of the TV Box. Wait a full minute, plug it in, and let it finish booting.
There is a shortcut when the menu drags. Press the A button to open Help, move to the Restart tile, and press OK.
You can also restart a single TV Box from the Xfinity app on your phone, which helps when the remote does nothing at all.
When the TV and the internet go down together, look at the equipment first. An Xfinity router blinking orange points at a service problem on the line.
Fix 4. Confirm the remote matches your box
The XR11, XR15, XR2, and XR5 all pair with an X1 TV Box. The XR16 belongs to Xfinity Flex, and the XR100 ships with the Xumo Stream Box, which is the current Xfinity streaming device.
A leftover remote from a different box lights up, blinks, and never changes a channel.
- Read the model number on the back of the remote or under the battery cover.
- Match it against the table above.
- Use the remote that came with your current box if the model does not line up.
Flex and Xumo boxes stream over your home internet, so Xfinity WiFi that keeps disconnecting can look exactly like a dead remote.
If nothing worked
Try the box from the Xfinity app on your phone. Xfinity also runs a web remote in a browser, and its web remote page lists the boxes it covers today.
If those change channels and the handheld remote still will not, the remote hardware has failed.
Xfinity swaps an old or broken remote for a new one at an Xfinity Retail Store. The current terms sit on Xfinity’s broken remote page, linked at the bottom of this article.
Keep watching in the meantime through the Xfinity Stream app on a streaming player. Our fixes for Xfinity Stream not working on Roku cover the setup problems that come up most.
Swaps that help and swaps that waste your time
A matching remote from another room works once you pair it to this box. Recommended.
The Xfinity web remote in a browser changes channels while you wait for a replacement. Acceptable as a stopgap on the boxes its coverage page lists.
Pulling the TV Box out of a cabinet changes nothing for channels on a paired X1 voice remote, because Aim Anywhere runs on radio. Skip it.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Xfinity remote change volume but not channels?
Volume travels to your TV over infrared. Channel commands travel to the Xfinity TV Box on a separate link, so a working volume button only proves the batteries still have some life. Pair the remote to the TV Box again to restore the channel side.
How do I reset an Xfinity remote with no Setup button?
On an XR15, hold the A button (triangle) and the D button (diamond) together until the status light turns from red to green, then press 981 on the number pad. The light blinks to confirm, and the remote is now unpaired and ready for setup. The XR16 and XR100 use different sequences, listed in the table above.
Do new batteries unpair an Xfinity remote?
A battery swap leaves the pairing alone. Every Xfinity reset needs a deliberate button sequence on the remote itself. Run the pairing steps again if channels still fail on fresh cells.
Can I use my phone to change channels instead?
Yes. The Xfinity app controls your TV Box from a phone, and Xfinity also runs a web remote you open in a browser. Xfinity’s web remote page lists the boxes it covers today.
Is a replacement Xfinity remote free?
Xfinity swaps an old or broken remote for a new one at an Xfinity Retail Store. A mailed replacement arrives in a Getting Started kit and adds a shipping and handling fee. Xfinity quotes that fee when you order the kit.
A lot of reading for no frigging solution, thanks for stealing 10 minutes of my life.
The only way I can change channels on my tv is one at a time, like 622 to 623 to 624 but never 623 to 701.
Our remote turns on and off the tv & the volume works however it won’t change channels and voice commands don’t work either.
