How to Pair an Xfinity Remote to Your TV

Want your Xfinity remote to control your TV power, volume, and input? It takes about a minute.

The easiest way to pair an Xfinity remote to your TV is the on screen guided setup. On an X1 box, aim the Voice Remote at the box, hold the Microphone button, and say “Program remote,” then follow the prompts and choose Yes to control your TV.

Your remote and Xfinity box already talk to each other. This step just teaches the remote your specific TV.

If your remote is not responding at all, you may need to pair it to the box first. That fix is below too.

The easy way on an X1 box: use voice

This is the fastest method Xfinity gives for the X1 box.

  1. Turn on your TV and your Xfinity box.
  2. Aim the Voice Remote at the box.
  3. Press and hold the Microphone button (the round voice button in the middle).
  4. Say “Program remote,” then let go.
  5. Follow the on screen steps. When it asks if you want to control your TV power and volume, choose Yes.
  6. Enter your TV brand using the on screen letters, then test the Power and Volume buttons.

When Power turns your TV off and on, the remote is paired. Turn the TV back on to finish.

Prefer the menu? Use Remote Settings

You can reach the same setup through the menu instead of voice.

  1. Press the Xfinity button, then reach the gear icon and open Settings.
  2. Choose Remote Settings, then Voice Remote Pairing.
  3. Follow the prompts, choose Yes to control your TV, and enter your TV brand.

On a newer Xumo Stream Box, the path is Settings, then Connected Devices, then Remote, then Control Your TV, where you pick your TV brand and model.

If the remote is not responding: pair it to the box first

A voice remote like the XR15 or XR16 needs to be paired to the Xfinity box before it can do anything.

  1. Make sure the box is on.
  2. Press and hold the Xfinity button and the Info button (the letter i) at the same time.
  3. Hold both for about 5 seconds, then let go.
  4. Watch the small light at the top of the remote. It changes from red to green when the remote pairs.

Now run the on screen guided setup above to add your TV.

Older remotes: program a TV code by hand

Some older Xfinity remotes have a Setup button. These use a TV code instead of the on screen menu.

  1. Turn on your TV.
  2. Press and hold the Setup button until the light at the top turns from red to green.
  3. Enter the first 5 digit code listed for your TV brand, found on Xfinity’s remote code list.
  4. The light blinks green twice if the code is accepted.
  5. Point the remote at the TV and test the Power button.

If the first code does not work, repeat and enter the next code listed for your brand.

Test that it worked

Aim the remote at your TV and try these three things.

  1. Press Power. The TV should turn off, then on again when you press it once more.
  2. Press Volume up and down. The TV volume should move.
  3. Press Mute. The sound should cut out and come back.

If all three work, you are done.

If it still will not pair

First, check the basics. Weak batteries are the top reason a remote will not respond, so try a fresh pair.

Stay within a few feet of the TV and box while you pair, and clear anything blocking the line of sight.
