Apple Watch Monogram: Add Your Initials Fast
A monogram on Apple Watch is your initials shown on the watch face. You type the letters once in the iPhone Watch app, then pick a face that displays them.
It is a watch face feature, not a separate app you tap open. So there is nothing to download.
You can use up to five letters or numbers. The whole setup takes about a minute.
Why put a monogram on your Apple Watch?
A monogram adds a personal touch and helps you spot your watch in a pile of identical ones. It is the fastest way to make the face feel like yours.
It also pairs nicely with a face you already like, since it slips into a slot instead of taking over the screen. If you baby your watch, our tips on removing scratches from Apple Watch glass keep that face looking sharp.
How do I put a monogram on my Apple Watch?
You set the letters on your iPhone, in the Watch app. Follow these steps in order.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone (the black icon with a white watch).
- Tap the My Watch tab at the bottom.
- Scroll down and tap Clock.
- Tap Monogram.
- Type up to five letters or numbers, then tap back to save.
That saves your monogram. The next step is choosing a face that shows it.
How to show the monogram on your watch face
The monogram only appears on faces built to display it. The Color face shows it right in the center.
To switch faces on the watch, touch and hold the current face, swipe to find Color, then tap it. Your initials appear in the middle.
Some faces show the monogram as a small complication instead. On those, touch and hold the face, tap Edit, swipe to the complications screen, tap a slot, and choose Monogram.

Which watch faces show the monogram?
| Watch face | How the monogram appears |
|---|---|
| Color | Large, in the center of the face |
| Infograph | As a complication in a corner slot |
| California | As a complication slot you pick |
| Meridian | As a complication slot you pick |
What characters can you use in a monogram?
You get up to five characters. Letters and numbers both work, so you can use your initials or a short nickname.
Emoji are not supported, so stick to letters and numbers for a clean look.
Monogram not showing up? Try this
First, make sure a face that supports the monogram is active, like the Color face. Faces that lack a monogram slot will never display it.
Second, check that a complication slot is actually set to Monogram on faces that use one. An empty slot shows nothing.
Third, open the Watch app, go to My Watch, Clock, Monogram, and confirm your letters are still typed in there.
Once your initials are set, you might enjoy tuning other features too, like Sleep mode on your Apple Watch or logging a session with strength training on Apple Watch.
Frequently asked questions
Is Monogram an app on the Apple Watch?
No. Monogram is a watch face feature, not an app in the app grid. You set it in the iPhone Watch app and it shows on supported faces.
How many letters can a monogram have?
Up to five. You can use fewer if you only want one or two initials.
Why is my monogram gone after a watchOS update?
An update can reset your active face to one without a monogram. Switch back to the Color face or re add the Monogram complication and it returns.
Can I put an emoji in my Apple Watch monogram?
No. The monogram field accepts letters and numbers only. Emoji and special symbols are not supported.
