How to Turn Off Sleep Mode on Apple Watch for Good
To turn off Sleep mode on Apple Watch, press the Digital Crown to reach the watch face, press the side button to open Control Center, then tap the Sleep Focus control. The bed icon at the top of your watch face disappears.
That handles tonight. Stopping it from switching itself back on tomorrow takes one more setting, and almost nobody mentions it.

Apple now calls this feature Sleep Focus. Its own status icon page still calls it Sleep mode, which is part of why the instructions floating around contradict each other.
Every path below was checked against Apple’s watchOS 26 Apple Watch User Guide on August 20, 2026.
Turn off Sleep mode on Apple Watch right now
- Press the Digital Crown (the round dial on the side) to get back to your watch face.
- Press the side button (the flat oval button below the crown) to open Control Center.
- Tap the Sleep Focus control. It shows a bed icon.
The bed icon at the top of the watch face disappears and the display returns to normal.
Turning a Focus off on the watch turns it off on your iPhone too, because Apple shares Focus settings between the two devices.
Control Center is worth learning properly while you are in there. It is also where you clear the Now Playing screen off an Apple Watch.
Stop Sleep mode turning itself back on every night
The switch above is a one night fix. Your sleep schedule turns the Focus on again at your wind down time, which is why people find themselves doing this every single morning.
The switch sits on the watch itself, three taps deep:
- Press the Digital Crown and open the Settings app on your Apple Watch (the gray gear icon).
- Turn the crown to scroll down and tap Sleep.
- Turn off Turn On at Wind Down.
Apple’s own description of that switch is short. Leave it on and Sleep Focus begins at the wind down time you set in the Sleep app.
Your iPhone can reach the same options if the watch is on the charger. Open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then tap Sleep.
Turn it off and you control Sleep Focus manually in Control Center, which is what most people were after all along.

Your sleep schedule keeps running underneath. Sleep tracking, the wake alarm and your sleep history all survive, so you keep the data and lose the nightly interruption.
Notifications come back at the same moment. If they were already patchy before any of this, our fixes for an Apple Watch not getting texts are the place to look next.
To stop the schedule as well, open the Sleep app on the watch, tap your wake up alarm, then turn the Digital Crown down to Full Schedule and edit it there.
Swiping up does not open Control Center anymore
Apple’s current instruction for opening Control Center is to press the side button, and it says nothing about swiping.
Older watchOS versions did use a swipe up from the watch face, which is what most published advice still tells you to do.
Anyone following an older tutorial ends up swiping at a watch face that will not cooperate, then concludes the fix is broken.
Apple gives two different instructions for the same job
Both of these pages were live on August 20, 2026, and they send you down different routes under different names.
| Apple page | What it tells you to do | What it calls the feature |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch User Guide, watchOS 26 | Crown to the watch face, side button, tap the control | Sleep Focus |
| Status icons article 108038, published May 15, 2026 | Press and hold the Digital Crown | Sleep mode |

Use the User Guide path when your goal is to switch the Focus off. Apple prints it as a tip inside its own sleep tracking guide, next to the Sleep Focus settings it controls.
The press and hold gesture has a second job on the same Apple page. It is also how you turn off Water Lock, so a long crown press after a swim or a shower is doing something different from what you expect.
What each Sleep setting actually changes
Settings, then Sleep on the watch holds five switches, and Apple documents what each one does.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Turn On at Wind Down | Starts Sleep Focus automatically at your wind down time |
| Sleep Screen | Simplifies the watch display and the iPhone Lock Screen |
| Show Time | Keeps the date and time visible while Sleep Focus is on |
| Sleep Tracking | Records your sleep and sends it to the Health app |
| Charging Reminders | Reminds you to charge before wind down and tells you when charging finishes |
Separately, Apple prompts you to charge whenever the watch sits under 30 percent before bed.
Apple assigns the dark screen to the Focus itself rather than to any one switch. Its guide says the Sleep Focus turns off the watch display and limits distractions before your scheduled bedtime.
Sleep Screen is the switch that simplifies what you do see, on the watch and on your iPhone Lock Screen.
Two other features that darken your watch screen
Theater Mode and Water Lock both darken an Apple Watch, and neither one answers to anything above.
Theater Mode keeps the screen dark until you tap it, press a button or turn the Digital Crown, and it overrides the Always On display. Open Control Center and tap the two masks icon to switch it off.
Water Lock stops the screen responding to taps at all. Apple’s instruction is to press and hold the Digital Crown to turn Water Lock off.
If your screen is dark but the bed icon is missing from the watch face, Sleep Focus is already off and one of these two is the real cause. Our guide on fixing an upside down Apple Watch screen covers another display setting people trip over.
Skip tomorrow morning’s alarm without deleting anything
A schedule you like can still be wrong for one particular Saturday.
- Open the Alarms app on your Apple Watch.
- Tap the alarm shown under the bed icon.
- Tap Skip for Tonight.
Your normal schedule picks up again the following night, with nothing edited or removed.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Apple Watch go into Sleep mode by itself?
A sleep schedule is running and its wind down time has arrived. Turn off Turn On at Wind Down in Settings, Sleep to stop that happening.
Does turning off Sleep Focus stop sleep tracking?
No. Sleep Tracking is a separate switch in Settings, Sleep, and it keeps recording as long as you wear the watch to bed.
Why did turning it off on my watch also turn it off on my iPhone?
Apple shares Focus settings between an iPhone and its Apple Watch as standard, with no switch to set.
Share Across Devices, on the iPhone under Settings then Focus, is what extends the same settings to your other Apple devices.
What does the crescent moon icon mean?
That is a different Focus, usually Do Not Disturb. The bed icon is the one that means Sleep Focus is active.
Can I keep the sleep schedule but stop the Focus?
Yes. Turn off Turn On at Wind Down in Settings, Sleep and leave the schedule in place.
Apple ties the dark display to the Sleep Focus, so switching the Focus off is what returns the screen to normal.
Which watchOS version do these steps apply to?
These paths were checked against the watchOS 26 Apple Watch User Guide, which states that sleep tracking is available on watchOS 8 or later.
Older watches running watchOS 9 or earlier put Control Center behind a swipe up instead. Our guide on picking the right Apple Watch to buy covers which models still get current updates.
