Why Is My Sonos Blinking Orange? What It Means
A blinking orange light on your Sonos looks alarming, but it usually is not a problem at all.
Most of the time a flashing orange light just means your Sonos is connecting during setup, or you pressed play when nothing was queued up. Both clear on their own.
The color pattern tells you what is going on. Here is what each orange light means and what to do about it.
What does a blinking orange light on Sonos mean?
Sonos uses the status light to talk to you, and orange has a few meanings.
A slow flashing orange light during setup means the speaker is trying to connect. This is normal.
A fast flashing orange light right after you press play means the queue is empty, or nothing was played recently, so there is nothing to play.
A light that flashes orange and white together means the speaker is updating or doing a factory reset.
A solid orange light is different, and it points to a setup problem or overheating.
Fix 1: If it flashes orange during setup
This just means the Sonos is connecting. Give it a moment.
- Wait about a minute for it to finish connecting.
- Keep the speaker close to your router during setup.
- If it does not connect, close the Sonos app and open it again, then retry.
The light should turn solid white once it is connected and ready.
Fix 2: If it flashes orange fast after you press play
A fast orange blink after pressing play means nothing is in the queue.
- Open the Sonos app on your phone.
- Pick a song, station, or playlist.
- Tap it to start playing on that speaker.
The blink stops as soon as there is something to play.
Fix 3: If it flashes orange and white together
Orange and white flashing means the speaker is updating or resetting.
- Leave the speaker alone and let it finish. An update can take several minutes.
- Do not unplug it while the light is flashing, since that can interrupt the update.
- Wait for the light to settle to solid white.
If it keeps flashing orange and white for a long time and never plays sound, that can be a fault. See our guide on a Sonos flashing white light for the update and reset steps, or contact Sonos.
Fix 4: If the orange light is solid, not blinking
A solid orange light means one of two things.
During setup, it means the setup did not finish. Unplug the speaker for 10 seconds, plug it back in, and start setup again.
Any other time, a solid orange light can mean the speaker is overheating.
- Turn the Sonos off.
- Move it away from heat, direct sun, and other electronics.
- Give it space on all sides for air, and let it cool for 30 minutes.
- Turn it back on.
Once it is cool, the light should return to normal.
What if my Sonos keeps blinking orange?
If none of the above matches, and the light keeps flashing orange, restart the speaker first.
Unplug it for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. A restart clears most stuck states.

Frequently asked questions
Is a blinking orange light on Sonos bad?
Usually not. It most often means the speaker is connecting or the queue is empty. Only a long orange and white flash with no sound points to a fault.
Why is my Sonos flashing orange and white?
That pattern means it is updating or doing a factory reset. Let it finish and do not unplug it.
What does a solid orange light on Sonos mean?
It means setup did not finish, or the speaker is overheating. Reboot it, and if it is warm, let it cool down with space around it.
How do I stop my Sonos from blinking orange?
Match the pattern to the cause above. If nothing fits, unplug the speaker for 10 seconds and set it up again.
