No Sound Is Coming From My Roku
If your Roku has no sound, try performing a soft reset on your Roku device and TV. If that does not work, check your HDMI connections and cable condition, update the Roku software, adjust TV sound settings, or factory reset the Roku device.
Streaming has become the new standard for how people get their content – and understandably so. These days, you can watch just about anything you want thanks to third-party applications and media streaming devices like Roku.
With that being said, much like with all technology – Rokus can experience some issues from time to time. A common problem with Roku devices is that they fail to deliver sound. This can be quite annoying when you sit down to start streaming and find that your volume is not functioning.
Odds are that you have already tried the mute button with no success. So, what’s the problem? Depending on what is causing the issue, it could either be very easy to resolve or it might be something more technical.
To help you understand this further, we are going to take a closer look at why your Roku has no sound and what you can do to fix it.
After extensively researching Roku troubleshooting forums, I have been able to gather enough information to determine what causes the sound on this device to fail.
My research has indicated that there are multiple different factors that could be contributing to this problem and you should consider each one to resolve the issue.
Soft Reset Roku
Volume issues with your Roku can be quite serious – or they can be extremely basic. The majority of the time that your Roku does not deliver sound, it is due to a minor glitch in the system that can be fixed with a simple soft reset.
A Roku soft reset tends to clear up most minor problems with Rokus, as well as other devices. To perform a soft reset on your Roku, follow these steps:
- System
- Power (Turn Off)
- Unplug Roku from the power source
- Wait for 30 to 60 seconds
- Plug Roku back into power source
- Turn off Roku device
When you soft reset your Roku, you must let it fully drain itself of all power, which is why you must unplug it and give it at least 30 seconds (preferably more). If a minor glitch was behind your Roku sound issue, a soft reset should take care of it.
If your Roku still has no sound, you will need to try another method.
Soft Reset TV
The problem with your sound may not necessarily be your Roku device but the actual TV that you are using. If you rely on speakers that are built into your TV, then this could easily be the issue with your volume.
However, if you are connected to an external sound system, then you can disregard this approach.
Much like with your Roku, your TV can also experience a glitch from time to time, which a soft reset could also fix. Here’s how to soft reset your TV:
- Power down TV (Power Button)
- Unplug TV from the power source
- Wait for at least 60 seconds
- Plug TV back into the power source
- Turn on TV
When you turn on your TV after a soft reset, make sure to use the button that is on your actual TV and not the remote.
Check HDMI Connection & Cable Condition
Your HDMI cable is responsible for delivering video as well as audio to your TV, which means that it could potentially be causing the sound issue with your Roku. If you are receiving video without audio, it could be due to a poor connection with your HDMI cable.
Head over to your TV and inspect your HDMI cable. If you see that it is loose or partially unplugged, plug it in completely.
However, if the volume is still not turning back on, then unplug the HDMI cable and then plug it back in. HDMI connection problems can usually be solved with this simple approach.
With that being said, there may be a more serious problem with your HDMI cable. If the cable is damaged, it will likely result in poor performance – with audio issues being very common in this case. You should take a close look at your HDMI cable to see if you can spot any noticeable damage.
Keep an eye out for any frayed or exposed wires, as this will be a definite sign of a faulty cable.
In addition to the wire itself, check the pins on the connection points of your HDMI cable. If you see that they are bent or disfigured in any way, this will also indicate that your HDMI cable is damaged.
Lastly, your HDMI cable could potentially be damaged but you simply cannot see it. If you did not notice any physical damage, you should try using a different HDMI cable to see if this fixes the sound on your Roku. If the volume comes back on, then you will need to replace your HDMI cable.
Update Roku Software
Roku updates its software regularly and if you haven’t updated yours in a while, it could be responsible for a variety of different issues with your device – including the sound. A simple update can do a lot of good for your Roku’s performance and it may be what is needed to get your volume working.
To update your Roku software, follow these steps:
- Home button (Roku remote)
- Settings
- System
- System Update
- Check Now
Once you do this, Roku will start searching for the latest update. If you are connected to the internet, your Roku should update itself without you needing to go through this manual process. However, sometimes the device fails to update on its own.
If you haven’t noticed an update in a while, be sure to check periodically, as this could prevent sound issues and other glitches from occuring.
Adjust TV Sound Settings
A potential culprit behind your Roku volume issue could lie with your TV’s sound settings. Whether you are using a Roku TV or a standard TV, you need to access the sound settings of the device to ensure that they are set up correctly. For a Roku TV follow these steps:
- Home button (Roku remote)
- Settings
- Audio
- Speakers
- TV Speakers (Turn on)
However, if you are using a different TV, you will need to check the manual of the device to see how to adjust the sound settings. More often than not, all you need to do is find the ‘Settings’ and then select the appropriate audio channel under your audio settings.
Factory Reset Roku
If you have gone through all of the standard approaches for fixing your Roku sound, then you may have a serious bug within your software. The best way to clear up most of your software issues is to perform a factory or hard reset on your Roku.
A hard reset is going to reboot your entire Roku system and launch it as if it were out of the box. Follow these steps to factory reset your Roku device:
- Home button (Roku remote)
- Settings
- System
- Advanced System Settings
- Factory Reset
You will then need to follow this up with additional on-screen instructions. Although this should fix your volume issue if nothing else worked, you should avoid factory resetting your Roku until you have no other option.
A factory reset is going to completely reboot this system. This means that it will put all of our settings back to default and all of your customizations and preferences will be deleted.
In addition, any apps that you downloaded will also be deleted, which will require you to re-customize and re-download everything again.
