Oura Ring Review: It Saw the Cold Coming
After almost a year of daily wear in my family, the Oura Ring is worth it for most people, and the best moment came the day it warned us a cold was coming. It is comfortable, the tracking is accurate, and the battery lasts up to 8 days.
The two downsides are the price and the monthly membership.
My daughter has worn her Oura Ring 4 almost every day for close to a year. This review is built on that real use, checked against Oura’s own pages.
One quick note on models. Oura released the Ring 5 in mid 2026 as the newest and smallest model, but the Ring 4 she wears is still sold and now costs less, which makes it the value pick.

The morning the ring saw a cold coming
One morning the Oura app told my daughter her body looked like it was working harder than normal. She felt completely fine.
The next day she woke up with a cold.
That early warning is a feature called Symptom Radar. It watches your resting heart rate, heart rate changes, breathing rate, and body temperature while you sleep.
When those numbers drift, it flags that your body may be fighting something, up to two days before you feel it.
One honest note. Oura says the ring is not a medical device and cannot diagnose illness.
It spots strain early so you can rest and take it easy. It does not tell you what is wrong.
What the Oura Ring costs
The Ring 4 started at $349 for silver or black, with pricier finishes above that.
Since the Ring 5 arrived, Oura cut the Ring 4 price to clear stock, so it often sells for less now. The newer Ring 5 starts at $399.
On top of the ring, the Oura membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year.
Most of the scores and trends need it, so plan on paying it.

You can often buy it with pre tax money
This is the tip almost no one mentions. If you have an FSA or HSA through work, the Oura Ring is usually eligible.
That means you can buy it with pre tax dollars, which is a real discount. Oura says the ring, the membership, chargers, shipping, and taxes can all qualify.
The extended protection plans do not qualify.
Here is how to do it.
- Check with your FSA or HSA provider that the Oura Ring is covered on your plan.
- At checkout, pay with your FSA or HSA card like a normal card.
- If your plan does not take the card directly, save the receipt and file for reimbursement.
What it is like to live with
The ring is light and you forget it is on, which is why it is so good for sleep tracking. It reads your sleep far better than a watch that you take off at night.
Battery life is up to 8 days, and a full charge takes about 20 to 80 minutes on the little dock.
It comes in a range of sizes, and Oura sends a free sizing kit first so you order the right fit. A ring cannot be resized later, so this step matters.
What failed, and how Oura handled it
Her ring did stop working once in that first year. We contacted Oura and they shipped a replacement quickly, no fight.
One failure in a year is not perfect, but the fast no hassle replacement left us trusting the brand more, not less.
Oura Ring 4 vs Ring 5: which should you buy
Both rings do the same core tracking and use the same app and membership. The Ring 5 is the newer model.
| Feature | Oura Ring 4 | Oura Ring 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $349 or less on sale | From $399 |
| Size | Slim | Smaller and thinner |
| Battery | Up to 8 days | About a week |
| Best for | Saving money | Newest design |
My family has only worn the Ring 4, so I will not pretend to have tested the Ring 5. If you want the newest ring, get the Ring 5. If you want nearly the same thing for less, the Ring 4 is the deal.
Oura vs a cheap smart ring
You do not have to spend hundreds to try a smart ring. My other daughter wears a $55 ring instead.
It does the basics without a monthly fee, but it is less accurate and has no early illness alert.

Oura vs Apple Watch
My daughters own both. They wear the rings daily and the watch mostly for work.
The ring wins for sleep and comfort and battery. The watch wins for notifications and apps.
If you left a fitness band behind like we left our Fitbits, a ring is an easy next step.
Should you buy the Oura Ring?
Buy it if you want the best sleep and health tracking in a tiny package and you do not mind the membership.
Skip it if monthly fees bother you, and grab a no fee alternative instead.
