AirPods Lifespan: When to Replace Them

Most AirPods last about 2 to 3 years before the battery gets noticeably weak, and the charging case usually lasts a year or two longer. The earbuds fade first because their tiny batteries charge and drain far more often than the case does.

That is the short answer on AirPods lifespan. The longer answer, including how to stretch that time and when a battery swap makes sense, is below.

Why AirPods slow down over time

The batteries inside AirPods are lithium ion, the same kind in your iPhone.

Every charge uses up a small piece of their life. Like most lithium ion batteries, after hundreds of charges they hold only about 80 percent of what they once did.

Because the earbuds are so small, that drop shows up fast. A pair that once played for 5 hours might only reach 2 or 3 after a couple of years.

How long each part really lasts

Here is a rough guide from real world use, not lab numbers.

Part Typical lifespan Why
AirPods earbuds 2 to 3 years Small batteries, charged many times a day
Charging case 3 to 5 years Bigger battery, charged far less often

Heavy daily use pushes you toward the short end. Lighter use, and being kind to the battery, pushes you toward the long end.

A real look at AirPods after a few years

In our house, AirPods are everyone’s go to, and we have used almost every generation over the years.

My wife wears her AirPods 3 through the workday, mostly on Teams calls, so they get charged hard. She keeps an older AirPods 1 set as a backup, and after years of use that first pair’s battery is clearly weaker now, though it still works as a fill in while the main pair charges.

That is the honest pattern. The earbuds do not die all at once. They just hold less each year until a full day of heavy use needs a second pair or a midday top up.

How to make your AirPods last longer

You cannot stop battery wear, but you can slow it.

Keep them out of heat. A hot car is the fastest way to hurt any battery. Store AirPods at room temperature.

Do not leave them charging for days. Take the case off the charger once it is full instead of leaving it plugged in all the time.

Let them rest in the case. The case tops them off and protects them. Loose earbuds drain slowly and get lost.

Turn on Optimized Charging. This iPhone feature slows charging near full to ease battery wear, and it is usually on by default.

When to replace them or swap the battery

Once your AirPods cannot get through your normal day, you have two choices.

The first is a battery service through Apple. Apple treats worn AirPods batteries as a paid service and quotes the fee after checking them. If you have AppleCare Plus, Apple replaces the battery at no charge when capacity drops below 80 percent.

The second is simply buying a new pair, which many people do since the service can cost close to a newer model. If you go that route, our guide comparing AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 can help you choose.

Weak battery is not the only sign of age. We also explain whether AirPods lose volume over time, how the AirPods case battery works, and what to do when one AirPod sounds quieter than the other.

People also ask

Do AirPods get worse over time? Yes. Play time drops as the battery ages. Most pairs feel clearly weaker after 2 to 3 years of daily use.

Can you replace an AirPods battery? Not at home, since the earbuds are sealed. Apple offers a paid battery service, and it is free under AppleCare if capacity falls below 80 percent.

Does the case wear out too? It does, but slower. The case has a larger battery and charges far less often, so it usually outlives the earbuds by a year or two.

Is it worth fixing old AirPods? Sometimes. If the service cost is close to a new pair, most people buy new. If your model is recent and you like it, the battery service can be worth it.
