So far, Apple has released two versions of its Apple Pencil to be used with the iPad Pro. You can charge your Apple Pencil in different ways once the battery’s juice depletes.

Can You Charge Apple Pencil with iPhone?

Whether or not you can charge your Apple Pencil with your iPhone depends on what generation of Apple pencil you have. You cannot charge second generation Apple Pencils with iPhones, but you can charge first generation Apple pencils with iPhones.

The Apple Pencil is fast to charge. After only 15 seconds of charging, you can get 30 minutes worth of battery life. If you charge the Apple Pencil through your iPad Pro, a full charge should give you 12 hours of usage. Both generations of the Apple Pencil take around the same length of time.

Because some Apple devices might take longer to charge depending on how you charge them and which charger you use, you might want to know what to expect when charging the Apple Pencil.

It’s fair to wonder whether one version of the Pencil might take longer to charge than the other based on the different charging methods allowed.

However, it’s worth noting that you don’t get an indication of where the battery status is on your Apple Pencil while using it.

Instead, the Apple Pencil must be connected to the iPad Pro and you will have to check the battery percentage through the Battery widget on your iPad.

Swipe from left to right to Today View to see the battery widget to check your Apple Pencil’s current battery status.

If you don’t already have the Battery widget on your iPad Pro, you will have to add it to check your Apple Pencil’s battery status

To do that, swipe over to Today View and long-press an empty spot on your Home Screen.

Tap on the plus icon in the upper left corner of your screen.

Scroll down to the widgets gallery and choose Batteries.

You can select a small, medium or large size for the widget.

After selecting the size, press on “Add Widget,” which appears at the bottom of the screen.

Can You Charge an Apple Pencil with Your iPhone?

You can only charge an Apple Pencil with your iPhone if you have the first-generation Pencil. This is because that version has a Lightning adapter underneath the Apple Pencil cap. When you remove the cap on your Apple Pencil, it exposes the Lightning adapter.

Because of the Lightning adapter on the first-generation Apple Pencil, you are able to charge it with your iPhone. It’s easy to do that. All you need to do is to plug it into your iPhone’s Lightning charger port.

However, while you charge your Apple Pencil with your iPhone, you will not have access to the Battery widget that can inform you of the battery status on the Pencil.

In addition to being able to charge the Apple Pencil with your iPhone, you can also do so with other devices that support the Lightning charge method.

However, you can only check the battery status on your Apple Pencil by connecting it to your iPad Pro.

It’s also important to know that charging an Apple Pencil with an iPhone will cause the battery to drain faster.

This is probably due to the much smaller, much less powerful battery found in iPhones compared with the larger battery that powers the iPad Pro.

The second generation Apple Pencil cannot be charged with an iPhone.

This is because that version of the device does not have the Lightning adapter like the first generation.

However, the second generation Apple Pencil can be charged wirelessly.

Of course, if your second generation Apple Pencil needs to be charged, you can also charge it with your iPad Pro.

When you do this, you can also check the battery status by accessing the Battery widget.

What Other Methods are Available for Charging an Apple Pencil?

In addition to charging your Apple Pencil with your iPad Pro and iPhone in the case of the first generation model, there are other methods you can use for charging.

Thanks to the older version being equipped with the Lightning adapter, you can charge it in an outlet using a wall charging block.

You can also charge your older Apple Pencil with a Mac by plugging the Lighting adapter into a Lighting cable plugged into your Mac.

However, if you have a Mac with only USB-C charging ports, you need a USB-2 to USB-C adapter.

You can charge your first generation Apple Pencil with iPad models other than the iPad Pro as well.

You can do that the same way you charge your Apple Pencil with an iPhone.

Remove the cap from the Lightning adapter and plug it into the iPad’s Lightning charging port.

Meanwhile, you should know that the newer model Apple Pencil is considered to have wireless charging capability, but it’s not the same as with iPhones.

In other words, you can’t simply place it down on a Qi wireless charging pad and expect its battery to be replenished.

When the term “wireless charging” is used to describe the second generation Apple Pencil, it refers to the way it charges on the iPad Pro.

It magnetically connects to the iPad’s side and automatically charges that way.

Can You Use an Apple Pencil with an iPhone?

If you own an Apple Pencil, you might want to try it out on your iPhone.

Unfortunately, this can’t be done because the Apple Pencil is incompatible with iPhone.

It can only be used with iPads and is best suited for use with the largest version, the iPad Pro.

Whether or not you can charge your Apple Pencil with your iPhone depends on which version of the Pencil you own.

Many Apple users reported being happy with the different methods for charging that came with the first generation model because it can, indeed, be charged with an iPhone.

However, if you own the second generation Apple Pencil, you are limited in the way you can charge it as it lacks the Lightning adapter option.
